• Powder Mill Disc Golf Course

Powder Mills is the spark plug of disc golf courses here in Marquette County. Set amid rock outcroppings, forested ridges, and the Dead River, this 18 hole course is conveniently located near Kaufman soccer fields by the BMX track. Powders Mills is the first professionally designed course, and includes two tees, winning over amateurs and pros alike. “The course demands accuracy and control more than distance and powers”-Tim Kopacz (President of U.P. Disc Golf Association). There are holes that stretch out to 480′, 500′, and 525’ though the shorter red tees work to relieve much of that distance and range from 120′ to 350′. The hope is to boost tourism through an engaging, interactive activity, which also caters to the local community base. Between the beautiful setting, and the challenging holes, you can’t lose at this course.

The local disc golf group collaborated with Chocolay Township to expand the course into 18 holes, exponentially increasing the course’s popularity. Though the course is shorter than Powder Mill, it is much more technical. 17 out of the 18 holes are set in the woods, surrounding you with scenic, shaded scenery. At this course, accuracy is your aim.

The existing course has been around for almost 10 years, and has seen a bit of growth and change to overcome issues of crowding and safety. But the big news on the block is that in conjunction with the city of Ishpeming and a Michigan DNR grant, a development of a new 18 holes disc golf complex, and 9 hole beginner skills course is in the works. The new designs seek to stir up both challenge and excitement, incorporating the elevation along the hills, and trails surrounding Teal Lake, and the city’s tubing hill bowl area.
