Deep in the vaults of campus are the remnants of a technological revolution, both on-campus and beyond. NMU is one of the most technologically advanced campuses in the country, continually pushing the boundaries in education, research and communications.

On Saturday, February 16, the Beaumier Center will be opening a new exhibition about the changes in technology on campus.  The exhibition will feature dozens of artifacts from the Center’s collection and from offices and storage facilities across campus.  The exhibition will delve into how technology is used on campus today and where we are headed to in the future.  It will be on display through May of 2019 and there will be a series of events connected to the exhibit.

The exhibition will open at 1 p.m. on Saturday, February 16 in the Center’s gallery in Gries Hall.  There will be food and refreshments at the reception, which is free and open to the public.

Upper Peninsula artist April South-Olson's encaustic paintings explore the human connection to the natural world. Within each landscape, Olson aims to capture a single moment in time. Each work in this series is inspired by a pattern or event - the last day at the beach, the first day of school, watching birds fly. The transparency of the material reveals the present moment while illustrating its connection to the fleeting past.

The workshop will include an overview of the plot and characters, tips on how to prepare for the audition, and an introduction to Shakespearean English.

An abridged production of As You Like It, directed by Sturmer, will be part of SAYT’s 2019 Play Festival this spring. As You Like It follows the story of Rosalind and her cousin Celia as they flee to the Forest of Arden. As a safety precaution during their journey, they assume disguises; Rosalind dresses as a young man named Ganymede and Celia as a shepherdess called Aliena. In the forest they encounter the lovesick Orlando who, taking her to be a young man, confides in Rosalind that his affections are overpowering him. Rosalind, as Ganymede, promises to cure Orlando of his lovesickness if he agrees to pretend Ganymede is Rosaline and promises to come woo her every day. Orlando agrees, and the love lessons begin. Rosalind also encounters a variety of memorable characters including a traveller named Jaques who speaks many of Shakespeare's most famous speeches (such as "All the world's a stage", "too much of a good thing" and "A fool! A fool! I met a fool in the forest").

The workshop will include acting and improvisation games, plot explanation, character analysis, Shakespearean English exercises, and scene readings. Participants will receive take-home audition materials and are encouraged to come to the workshop with questions regarding plot, characters, and audition preparation.

Registration is now open. Workshop admission is free. Visit https://saytheater.org/upcomingevents/ to sign up for the workshop and learn more.

Marquette Maritime Museum's History on Tap series presents John Lenters
"Through Storm and Calm: The Ever-Changing Weather and Climate of the Great Lakes." Ever since the glaciers retreated from the Great Lakes, these vast and deep bodies of water have had a long history of creating and modifying *their own weather and climate. From the calm, foggy season of early summer to the notorious Gales of November, mariners have long known to respect whatever weather the big lakes throw at them. Lighthouses and buoys that still guide mariners' paths are now used as climate observatories, monitoring the “invisible weather” that would otherwise go unnoticed on these immense bodies of water, while also measuring how climate change is affecting ice cover, water temperature, and evaporation. With a focus on Lake Superior, this presentation will introduce you to the mystery and wonder of Great Lakes weather, seasons, and climate - and how they may all be changing. Join us on March 5 at 7:00 p.m., at the Ore Dock Brewing Company. $5 suggested donation at the door.

Based on the 1992 motion picture and inspired by a true story, Newsies features a Tony Award-winning score by Alan Menken including the now classic songs “Carrying the Banner,” “Seize the Day,” and “Santa Fe.” SAYT’s production features 61 local youth directed by Susan Candey with choreography by Jill Grundstrom and music direction by Jeff Bruning.

Set in turn-of-the century New York City, Newsies is the rousing tale of Jack Kelly, a charismatic newsboy and leader of a band of teenaged "newsies." As part of the global day of goodness Connect Marquette be joining together for the Every Child Deserves A Birthday initiative. Come help stuff 100 birthday bags for children in Marquette County. Bags will be filled with cake mix, frosting, a candle, and a book, along with other donated items, and then given to the Marquette County Salvation Army food bank to distribute. Help make a child's birthday special, because truly, every child deserves a birthday!

How can you help? Come to the Children's Museum and help stuff the bags!

Or, consider donating 100 items for the bags, such as bubbles, birthday cards, play dough, stickers, balloons, party hats, glow sticks, noisemakers, bubble gum or whatever you can dream up! Channel your inner child and think of something fun. Our only ask is that you bring 100 so that all bags get the special item. If you plan on contributing something, let us know so we can recognize your participation and help spread goodness!

TEDxNMU 2019 will be bigger and better than ever. Last year, you spoke and we listened. We are offering 5x more tickets than 2018 and encourage community members, faculty, staff, alumni, and students to attend this year’s event.

This year’s theme is “Diving Deeper”. Speakers at TEDxNMU have found their passion in life, and have dove headfirst into it, whether it’s a job, hobby, or interest. Speakers have traveled across the world, changed the course of their education, and started their own businesses. They’ve reflected on their journey, and are ready to take the stage on March 16, 2019, to share their insight with the world. They have followed what made their heart sing, and they hope to inspire those in the audience at TEDxNMU to do the same.

We’ve asked a handful of speakers to share their own stories, and we ask that you come prepared on March 16 to hear new ideas, interact with people from all walks of life, and challenge yourself to find out how you can dive deeper into your passions. As speakers will share from the stage, once you dive deeper, your life will change for the better.
