Plan to stop alot on your ride along M-28 between Marquette and Munising. Along the highway you’ll be enticed by the wonders of Lake Superior with plenty of beach for your enjoyment. It’s time to take in your human nature, slip off the boots and feel the sand beneath your feet.
Wanting to stop off and have a picnic? I would recommend the small inland lake, Deer Lake which has a great turnoff with picnic tables and a summer warmed lake for swimming. If your looking for some unique sculptures, Lakenenland Park(Featured on HGTV’s Offbeat America) ran by a local yooper will definitely peak your interest.
Marquette offers many of view for you to wonder at, during the shipping season the ore dock at Presque Isle Park will usually be hosting one of our “Great Ladies”, the iron ore ships loading iron ore pellets for distribution in the lower lake and beyond. These ships, when in
at the dock are so close you can reach out and touch them and provide great photos. But don’t stop there Presque Isle Park is a pristine almost island opened to foot and motor traffic with loads of picnic spots available. Take a tour around the island and be amazed at the scenic view of Sugarloaf Mountain, Hogsback Mountain and the near by islands in Lake Superior.
Coming out of Presque Isle I would recommend a drive along HWY 550 going up to Big Bay. On the trip up pull into the parking lot of Sugarloaf Mountain at the top is another one of Marquette’s great vista views.
