Based on the best-selling novel by Ishpeming defense attorney and author John Voelker, the courtroom drama is a true story of his experience successfully defending an Army Lieutenant charged with shooting a bartender in Big Bay, Michigan. The film was directed and produced by Otto Preminger and starred Jimmy Stewart and Lee Remick.

The Upper Peninsula Collection consists of material culture artifacts relating to the ethnic, religious and social diversity of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. These include a wide array of artifacts such as household pieces, clothing, arts and crafts, symbolic items, recreational equipment and just about anything that is related to the history of the Upper Peninsula’s people.

The Northern Michigan University Collection consists of three-dimensional artifacts from the history of NMU. These include items related to educational, administrative and athletic activities, and student life on campus.

“The Ishpeming Area Historical Society Museum showcases the early life and times of Ishpeming’s citizens.  Clubs, businesses, past times, and celebrations are represented.  Each year there is a focus display, with the letters and documents of Frederick Brastaad and his daughter for 2012.  Also located in our museum is the Marquette County Paisano Club and Vasa Lodge of Ishpeming artifacts.  Admission gives visitors access to the Cliff’s Mine Shaft Museum, Rock and Mineral Club of Ishpeming, and the Ishpeming Historical Society Museum.  We are open from mid-June to early fall.  Visitors will enjoy the variety of treasures in the gift shop.”

The K.I. Sawyer Heritage Air Museum was founded by members of local Air Force Association (AFA) Lake Superior Chapter 238 in 1993. The museum board was reorganized and a home for the museum was found in December of 2005. The museum is a 501 (C)(3) non-profit tax-exempt organization dedicated to promote and preserve the heritage and aviation history of K.I. Sawyer while honoring the patriotic service of its veterans and civilians. The air force base was named after Kenneth Ingalls Sawyer a former County Road Commissioner

The Hiawatha Festival is the only event of its size and scope in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Each year’s event features traditional-music styles that include bluegrass, old-time, Cajun, Celtic, acoustic blues and folk – including singer/songwriters – and dance. The Marquette Area Blues Society (MABS) was born July 4, 2003 during the annual fireworks display in Marquette at the Lower Harbor Park.
